Co-op “inundated” with support messages

The Co-op have issued their own press release

We have been inundated with messages of support for our stance after Christian Voice issued a press release, which has received national coverage on radio, TV and in the newspapers. In response we are vigorously asserting our customers’ ethical policy.

Seemingly unperturbed by CV’s threatened boycott.

They also provide a special email address for messages on the subject: ethics(AT)co-operativebank.co.uk

(Thanks to Garry of BSSC in the comments)

Stephen Green was on the programme It’s My Life last night talking about freedom of expression. He spouted his usual pro relegious bollox.

  2. Andrew Nixon says:

I’ve already sent my congratulations to the Co-op, and as I’m about to switch my bank account, they’re now at the top of my list!

There is too sides to this argument. One is that should a bank be deciding who can or cannot be amongst it’s customers based on politcial/relegious views.
Should Christian Voice be not allowed to have an account with a bank because they hold opinions that the bank may disagree with?
However since CV have induldged in quite aggresive and intimidatory tactics a company like a bank has a right to question whether such tactics are acceptable in a civilised society.
Whilst CV contine their vitriolic campaign of hate against theatres, homosexuals etc then it comes as little surprise that a company like the Cooperative Bank does not wish to do buisness with them.

The co-operative bank is more than just a company. It is part of the co-operative wholesale group and every year they ballot members (customers) to see which ethical issues the members would most like to see their money used to take a stand against.
Given that they are not simply a standard banking organisation, I’d say that they’ve every right to make ethical considerations when making business decisions (from the big – not loaning money to weapons manufacturers; to the small – which insane bigoted blackmailer not to have as a customer). I’ve been a customer of the co-op bank for over a decade now, and it was for precisely these reasons that I joined them, and for precisely these reasons that I intend to stay with them.
Plus, their internet & phone banking services are dead good. Andrew – smile is a wholly-owned internet-banking subsidiary of the co-op with the same principles but slightly better interest rates.

  5. Christopher Shell says:

Exactly – go for the bank with a conscience every time.

Green and his vile mates are no better and no different than the Klan if you ask me. No wonder gays have such a hard time of it; and this man complains about freedom of speech! HEEEELOOOO!
