Time Trumpet raises MPs, Daily Mail hackles

Armando Ianucci’s latest comedy, Time Trumpet, caused considerable offence before it was even shown on BBC2 last night. The Daily Mail reports on the uproar, quoting several MPs who were particularly concerned about its Oscar-style “Terrorism Awards” ceremony.

Some previews are available on the website (see link above). MWW was particularly amused by the real footage of Natasha Kaplinsky and Jeremy Bowen reporting on the al-Grrraaba Mo-toon protests, cut with spoof placards which read:
– BEHEAD THE INFIDEL AND CACKLE AT HIS STUMP
– CUT OFF THE TITS AND BALLS OF THE APOSTATES AND FEED THEM TO THE PROSELYTES
– SET FIRE TO THE ENEMY’S FLAG JUMP UP AND DOwN ON IT THUS EXTINGUISHING IT RELIGHT FLAG REPEAT AS NECESSARY
– DEATH TO EVERYTHING AFTER THE 8TH CENTURY
– SLAUGHTER THE LAUGHERS
– HUNT DOWN THE SARCASTIC TOWNIES AND GAS THEM LIKE BADGERS
– KILL ISLAMAPHOBES QUEERS ESPECIALLY
– JEWS GLISTENING MALIGNANT POLYPS

Ha ha ha!

Bugger. I missed it. The clips look very good. One thing that is desperately lacking in this country these days is decent satire. We may take the mickey out of the yanks for not getting irony too well, but the one thing they’ve got us beaten on is political satire. Just think about South Park, the Daily Show, etc, etc. Maybe Armando Ianucci can show us the way. 10pm Thursday is a bit of a backwater, though, isn’t it?

Bugger on stilts! I missed it, too, and what makes it worse is that I bloody well knew it was on. One to catch next week.

  3. Andrew Nixon says:

I managed to miss it too. Even more annoyingly it seems to be the only BBC show that doesn’t get a repeat.

  4. A genuinely remarkable comment on the Daily Mail article:

“When is this “comedy genius” as James from Liverpool puts it, going to make a satirical show about the Mohammad cartoons and the London Underground bombings?”

Er, that’s what he’s just done. Did you read the article, John from Indianapolis Indianapolis [sic]?

  5. Andy Gilmour says:

Missed the show, but some of the internet clips very good…

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel the title “Time Trumpet” kinda let’s it down a bit. Not quite up to his usual standards…

    Ah well.

I guess he’s the guy doing the satire on telly, and I’m just a candidate for “world’s biggest underachiever”! 🙂

  7. Too late – the blog pile-on has begun.

More power to Mr. Iannucci’s arm, I say. It’s my lifelong ambition to outrage an MP.
