“Faith Fighter” game unites religions in outrage

Round one: Mohammed and God duke it out in Molleindustria's Faith Fighter

Representatives of several major religions have called for a game by radical developers Molleindustria to be removed from the internet because it is “deeply provocative” and “disrespectful”.

Faith Fighter is a punch-up game for one or two players which involves bouts between Jesus, Mohammed, Ganesh, Buddha, Budai, and God Himself. According to its developers,

Faith Fighter is the ultimate fighting game for these dark times. Choose your belief and kick the shit out of your enemies. Give vent to your intolerance! Religious hate has never been so much fun.

Douglas Miller, pastor of the Link Church in Birmingham:

This game is going out of its way to upset people and I think it should be taken off the internet.

Playing violent video games will ultimately affect your behaviour and this game is deeply offensive and provocative.

A spokesman for the Leicester-based Federation of Muslim Organisations:

In the current climate, this game can only create fear about religion. Having images depicting Muhammad in this way is also very offensive to our faith.

And Brian Appleyard called it “an offensive, futile project”.

Has it occurred to any of them not to play it?

Molleindustria is the brainchild of Italian artist and game designer Paolo Pedercini. Other games in the stable include Oligarchy, Queer Power, and the previously-banned Operation: Pedopriest.

Hope you’re not busy today.

UPDATE: (April 28) The game has been removed from the Molleindustria site in response to a statement from the OIC. But you can still play it here.

How the bloody hell can “images depicting Muhammad” (Shit Be Upon Him) be “very offensive” when no one has the faintest idea what he really looked like? These people are complete crackpots and shouldn`t be allowed out of the house unaccompanied.

@Andrew Nixon, I agree Andrew, attacking people over their misuse of the English language (when in many cases this is not their first language in any case) is an unnecessary diversion from the subject being debated, and can make you look like an arrogant, “superior” twit in any case!

How about we make a deal. Any faith that can show any evidence for the existence of their god can have it removed from the game. Sounds fair to me.

  13. Pasty745 says:

“Playing violent video games will ultimately affect your behaviour”

And all the violence and bigotry that comes from taking “holy texts” literally doesn’t? I am sorry (not really), but this game is far less of a problem than religion has been, or will be in the future. With this game no one actually dies, but throughout human history religion has killed millions. If anything, take religion off the internet, no, the world. A special message to Muslims (at least those of you who take shit to far), stop acting like your religion is above criticism. You love telling the whole world that we are infidels that deserve to die. Yet you can’t handle a few cartoons that are only making a social commentary about how you have taken shit to far. Stop claiming that your religion is about peace unless you plan to back it up yourself (by actually being peaceful). You would be able to win more people over to Allah by being nice than you have by being ass-holes. And to people of other faiths, the same goes for you.

  14. ro-man says:

    @barriejohn:

As a highly revered character in our history, and not knowing what he looked like, we choose not to depict him rather than depict him imperfectly. It’s not just the Prophet, it’s considered disrespectful to depict anyone in a portrait. It’s only with the advent of the camera that this taboo was circumvented.

Islam has had a hand in bringing us to where we are today, the Islamic Empire was once the centre of scienctific development until the renaissance. The Prophet was highly influential and a person to be respected. I take offence to what you tagged to his name. It’s uncalled for.

The religion is in its own dark age at the moment. The corrupt are in control and the open minded aren’t speaking up. Blame the individuals who allow this to go on, blame me for lecturing you and not my fundamentalist brothers, but for God’s sake, don’t blame an innocent man.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that being spiteful and self-rightous is not going to help your cause any more than it helps ours. People need to learn humility and understand that everyone has different beliefs. That applies to everyone.

  15. jj says:

believe (or dont believe) but as you have a right to talk shite, others have a right to think what they want. respect should be universal regardless of who or wat u believe. athesiests obv dont think so.
as far as rippin it out of muslims goes, so wht if they stand up for what thy believe. if the other religions dont say anythin its cos they dont give a shi*

    >barriejohn (may shit be upon ur mother)
    >

  16. Angela K says:

That old canard: disrespectful to religion. Why should anyone respect an irrational belief system or fictional character such a god, jesus & mo – a pox be upon them. It is only right that we respect people but not those who use dark-age superstitious bollocks to bomb and oppress others. The muzzies and other religious nonsense believers want to grow up and stop acting like a bunch of very dangerous spoilt and retarded brats – no, lets just do the human race a favour and nuke them.

  17. dead yeti says:

shit be on peados, big mo included

  18. ro-man says:

Hate solves nothing. A mindset like that isn’t beneficial for anybody. Do you even consider the consequences of such actions? How can you be so devoid of remorse as to not even consider what you’re saying? “Let’s wipe out entire cultures because they don’t agree with me!”

It never fails to boggle me, the atheists who advocate a holocaust on religion. It is not the belief that is the problem. It is close-mindedness that is. You aren’t any better than the people who do oppress others. Elimination is not the answer. Think for a moment.

  19. barriejohn says:

ro-man: your beliefs are primitive, superstitious bullshit, and Mohammed was a complete nutcase. YOU are the ones who want to impose your stupid beliefs on others – I was brought up amongst fundamentalist Christians, so I know very well what I am talking about here. If you were to REALLY open your minds then you would see what absolute nonsense religious belief is!!!

  20. Pasty745 says:

    @ro-man
As an Atheist I could not care less about what someone else believes as long as they don’t push their shit on me. It is one thing to share ideas, but it is something else to have someone claim to be right and me wrong just because I don’t follow their “holy text”. That is the problem. I don’t care about getting rid of religion. If it did go away for some reason, I would want it to be because each individual decided for themselves to not believe. That is the only way that a truly atheist world could work. But the same can be said for religion (no matter which). My problem is with the religious extremists that actually want to kill people for not believing in the same god(s). If you want to claim your religion is about peace, then don’t go around beating and killing people in the name of your god(s). If you are going to hate someone, hate them for them, not because of their belief system. My oldest friend is Christian, and we have always debated our beliefs with each other. But we do so in a manner that is respectful. If one of us offends the other we talk it out. The point being that we can believe different things, but still get along very well. He has even told me that he would rather talk with me about religion than other Christians. There is something that you can learn from someone even if they are different than you.

    @JJ
“as far as rippin it out of muslims goes, so wht if they stand up for what thy believe”
It is one thing to stand-up for what you believe. But it is how they (the extreme ones at least) go about doing it. They have no problem telling the world how they should live their lives, but get real pissy when the rest of the world says “uh, no”. They don’t know how to take criticism. It is always soooo damn serious for them. It makes it impossible to not offend them. Christians use to be much the same way (and in certain places/cases they still are). It is just a matter of relaxing and not letting shit get to you. There is no need for there to be a barrier between people. To me it feels like racism, but with religion. There are so many people that see me as an evil person just because I don’t believe in a god. But I stand-up for myself by not being like them (as much as I can at least). If your religious text says that God is who judges everyone, then let him judge me, not you.

  21. barriejohn says:

jj – I don`t think my mother would be in the least worried by any of YOUR curses!!

  22. Pasty745 says:

    @barriejohn
I get what you mean in your reply to ro-man, but you have made yourself invalid by doing the same thing you just tried to call him out on.

  23. Wilford Brimley says:

People need to understand that while I must respect your right to have a belief, I do not need to respect that belief itself. If someone ‘believes’ that the earth is flat, do we need to respect that? If they say they are ‘offended’ by depictions of the earth as a sphere, do we stop making globes?

You have your right to believe in whatever pie in the sky you want. But I don’t have to respect your belief at all, no matter how many of you believe it. There’s a difference between belief and physical reality.

  24. barriejohn says:

Well said Wilford Brimley! Just because a lot of people “believe” something, that doesn`t give it any validity whatsoever. “Jesus” said “Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Wise words indeed – but not in the way that Christians interpret them!! When I finally woke up to the fact that what I had so earnestly believed for so many years was just a tissue of lies, fables, and superstitious nonsense, the feeling of relief was almost palpable. It was like a “conversion” experience, but in reverse. No longer would I have to perform mental somersaults to justify belief in such popycock as Adam & Eve, Noah`s Flood, The Tower of Babel, Jonah & the Whale, & Daniel in the Lions` Den, to say nothing of the “Virgin Birth”, and other NT “miracles”. I know that many “believers” have serious doubts about all this, but it is very difficult to stand up and say “I was wrong” and confess that your whoe life has been founded on a lie.

  25. Mark says:

If you worship a pedophile like Muhammad (Pork Be Upon Him) then you’re obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed.

But then let’s be fair. Jesus freaks aren’t exactly clear-headed either. It’s high time we started treating religion with the respect it deserves: none.

  26. ro-man says:

@barriejohn: Research the Prophet before you criticize. You obviously have no knowledge on the subject. He was only a man, but he was a great one. Also, I’m not imposing any of my opinions on you except to be accepting. There’s nothing to gain from being as close-minded as the people you oppose.

@Pasty: That’s what I’m getting at. An understanding. I see self-rightous atheists on the internet every single day, and self-rightous theists every day on the news. What matters the most is reaching an understanding between the two beliefs, like you and your friend. A lot of my own friends are atheists and we get along fine, accepting each other’s differences. My theist friends are too. But there remains a group of people on both sides who are suspicious of others. Atheists who can’t take theists seriously and vice versa.

And with Islam, yes, there’s the problem of some people being, ahem, bit anal about the religion. These are the people who take passages of the Quran out of context to justify their actions, and in a similar manner, some of the people most vehementally against the religion will take passages out of context. That doesn’t hold true to everyone, but the better of us are neither in control or at the head of the media. Part of the problem is a lack of an update in the religion, and that’s because it’s the corrupt who are in charge at central places such as Saudi Arabia. Changes need to be made in the way of religious thought, but antagonising the religious – or the unreligious, for that matter – is only going to set the us back.

  27. […] it’s a really cool game. It has received some negative publicity by religious groups who are outraged by it’s content. I think most religious people would […]

  28. Just say NO says:

ro-man, you like your religion, I do not. Does that mean I should die? Given what the world sees from islamic followers, the answer is yes. Now for a religion supposedly about peace, killing someone cause they do not believe in it just seems wrong. Given how your religion promotes the degradation of women, well that is yet another strike against it. now I am sure you will want to sputter about how most muslims are not like that but then my question is why dont all you muslims rise against the extremists and take back the peaceful nature of your religion? There are only 2 reasons for not doing so. Islam is NOT peaceful OR all muslims support what is happening and just say they do not to make a smokescreen.
    So, which is it?
now that is not to say only islam has done bad crap, christianity has a full history of violence. Spanish inquisition, crusades, witch hunts…. it goes on.
THIS is why so many atheists are against religion now.
religions written by man that allow or encourage crimes against other for the sake of religion.

  29. Just say NO says:

ro-man, you want others to be accepting of YOUR religion, so then why cant you be accepting of them when they make fun of it? It goes both ways. If they become accepting of you and stop, then that shows you cannot be accepting. it goes BOTH ways. That is the downfall of religion as a whole. Religion is NOT accepting of anyone not of the same religion.

  30. Pasty745 says:

    @ro-man
It is always refreshing to hear about others who can get along much like my friend and I. I think that some of the problem in getting people to get along is that we as people tend to speak in generalities. I myself do this at times (especially when I am having a bad day), but my friend is able to see past what I have said to get my actual meaning. Like if I say something about Christians or Jesus-Freaks, he knows I am talking about the extremists and not all Christians. It is not to say that my statements are great, but it does show that he has taken the time to understand me. And the same works the other way around. It also allows us to make fun of each others beliefs without getting mad. If you can’t laugh at yourself, or your beliefs, then things become stressful and that is when shit hits the fan (on a personal level). Not to say that you have to just let everyone walk all over you, but you must pick your battles and not freak about everything. Some people will do things just to piss you off, and by reacting to them you are doing what they want. Also the ones that freak-out are always fun to keep pissing off since they tend to forget logic and hurt their own case (this applies to everything).

  31. barriejohn says:

I`m not taking your crap ro-man, as, to me, YOU are the unacceptable face of Mohammedanism, not the extremists. At least they are honest! I know all about Mohammed – a megalomaniac barbarian in the mould of Hitler and Stalin, who was quite obviously mad, and had no concern for the personal sufferings of people whatsoever. Even people reading this blog think that there is some way that “all these religions” can “get on together”, when anyone who has looked into their creeds can see that this is patently not so!! They are all mutually exclusive – either THEY have “The Truth”, or the others have, in which case their precious “prophet” was either a liar or deluded. You can`t wriggle your way out of this. I advise everyone to shut their ears to propaganda and look at the facts before making judgments. Go to http://www.faithfreedom.org – a site run by ex-Muslims FOR Muslims, and your eyes will be truly opened!!!

  32. Silly says:

“These people are complete crackpots and shouldn`t be allowed out of the house unaccompanied.”

    Don’t worry, the women aren’t.

  33. ro-man says:

Similarly glad to hear others can get along. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one, especially on the internet, whose douches never fails to surprise me by their numbers.

The people most limited are the people who let their religion govern their every movement. They need to understand that there are other walks of life, and learn about them, and accept them.

  34. ro-man says:

For the record, barriejohn, I’m not the most religious of Muslims. I haven’t practiced in, oh, two months and a half now. A massive change considering I hadn’t missed a single prayer or fast in years. You could even say that I am ‘almost’ an atheist. What keeps me down most of all is my family – not your regular affair, there are additional complications that I’d rather not divulge. But there are good things to take from the religion, I know very good people who are Muslims and I care for my country’s betterment, so I refuse to believe that there is no hope.

  35. barriejohn says:

Then you`re not a Muslim ro-man!! And as far as “getting along” is concerned, I actually put some of the so-called “sayings of Jesus” on http://freethinker.co.uk this very morning:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the father but by me.”

“I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers. I am the door: by me if any man enter in he shall be saved.”

“Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep`s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

And from “The Apostle Paul”: “There is one god and one mediator between god and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

How can true Muslims (or others such as Jews, for that matter) possibly have any truck with any of this?

  36. Stonyground says:

I always think that it is laughable how religious people think that their god is all powerful but needs protection from a video game. Likewise the nature of blasphemy laws, we don’t need laws to protect scientific theories from insult. The truth of a scientific theory is self evident to any person who takes the time to learn about it. Anyone who criticises it without the relevant knowledge reveals him/herself to be a fool. Anyone who proves a scientific theory false adds to the sum of human knowledge and gains a place in the science pantheon. Only falsehoods need the protection of misguided laws.

Am glad to read a debate here like the one ro-man and JJ introduce. I think this is interesting that the point, I think people like barriejohn are trying to make is an assertion of their free speech as – I can say what ever i like, take it or leave it, same thing for for.
ro-man is having a valid point that indeed, if you want to talk with someone, communicate, it is not useful to make them feel insulted – but is indeed one of the crunch points in this whole debate.
We all have different levels of taboos we seem to follow. An obvious one one not saying every morning to your boss “Good morning pedo”. However, saying that if one follows the story of the mohamadian character, one can conclude that that was a pedophile, is of a different magnitude, precisely because, one wants to live in a place where shared beliefs/thoughts/customs/traditions of members of the society – can be questioned.
This is not saying to a person like you, ro-man, that one disrespects YOU in any shape or form. Many people that say, call a religion/icon in various un flattering names – actually do that because of feeling fed-up having to deal with religions at all.
On the other hand, ro-man and jj, seem to have some particular taboos that they want to be acknowledged, and it seems all fair enough untill the point of acknowledging your taboo, means not just self censorship on a personal level, which we all do in various levels – but an artistic, cultural, social and political one.
I think, that actually, we can all agree on this blog, that artistic, cultural, social and political censorship – is not what we want to have..

  40. Gavin says:

Personally I think Muhammed should be buggered with a rusty fish fork until he bleeds then god should be forced to lick it up

  41. Angela K says:

Quote: “I think, that actually, we can all agree on this blog, that artistic, cultural, social and political censorship – is not what we want to have”.

I agree but it is ALWAYS the religious nutters who want to censor any slight criticism of their daft belief systems.

  42. barriejohn says:

When we insult Mohammed (a murderer, barbarian, rapist, and so on) we are not insulting the person that ro-man and others of his ilk so slavishly follow. THEIR Mohammed is a figment of their imagination, just like the “gentle Jesus meek and mild” of the Christian faith. When I was an evangelical Christian I too was in love with this purely idealized Person (Jesus), for whom I would have laid down my life, just as they love and revere the “Mohammed” of their dreams. This person has little in common with the real historical character, and in this respect the extremists really do understand the founder of their religion much better than the moderates I`m afraid!!

Where can I play this awesome looking game?

  45. aharon says:

Angela K, yes, these are the noisy ones. However, if we look at a deity free belief system, like the capitalistic economic system – I think the censorship that goes into shutting dissenting voices, is far more pervasive, and arguably, damaging, than the religious-loud-screamers.. Annoying as the religious noise may be…

    * In a sense, we all have to suspend dis belief for the economy to operate in the way it does – hence the equation with religions. (Mind, there are some, be it scant evidence, that at least some religions began as financial mechanisms.. Could b an interesting phd for someone..)

    * Examples of capitalistic censorship can be seen in tv/radio channels making sure they do not antagonise advertisers.. Theres more but hey.. its just a comment..

  46. pan says:

maybe the problem is people misunderstanding the teachings of religion. i am not a religious person whatsoever.. i would say im spiritual though in the sense that i think what most religions are trying to say comes down to the same thing.. that we are born with innate morals to want to do good, and bad.. and that we must take the right path and ‘love thy neighbour’ or ‘though shall not kill’ for example. Religion also gives someone a drive, a reason to be alive. Without it some people would be lost. It comforts people in times of death knowing that their loved ones are going to a better place. So at the end of the day, i think religions intentions were good but is just shit now due to missunderstandings and the people who have now gained control of religion. Power corrupts.. its simple as that. You get priests parking up in limos while people around the world are starving.. and people killing in the name of the lord. Religion has turned into nothing but hypocricy and bullshit as far as im concerned but for an individual can be a very good thing in his/her life. I guess my ideal is that people are spiritual but dont impose their own beliefs on others. This is what religion is trying to do right now though by taking away peoples freedom of speech. I dont see how a cartoon could offend someone since its purpose is fun and games. I think people just need to take a chill pill and relax and be more open minded.

  47. Cris says:

Interesting that I don’t see many if any people here talking about respecting other beliefs even though they don’t agree with them.
If you are using “artistic license” to intentionally insult religion then it is not about censorship. It is not a “slight criticism of their daft belief system” It is an intentional provocation.
Just as any of us do not want religion shoved down our throats or your choice not to have a religious belief held against you. Those who choose to believe do not want their beliefs assaulted, or their choice to believe belittled.
And for those who would say “Well they started it first” or “They do they same to us.” this isn’t a playground for 6 year olds.
Respect those who choose to believe in a religion. Respect those who choose not to have a religious belief. It is an individual right that is always deeply personal to the individual and should not be assaulted in any form.
