Catholics get World Cup Hyundai ad pulled

A 30-second commercial which aired in America during the USA v. England World Cup game has been pulled because of complaints from Catholics.

The Hyundai ad, it was claimed, mocked the Eucharist by showing worshippers receiving slices pizza instead of the traditional communion crackers. At one point a football was shown sporting a Crown of Thorns.

Fr Marcel Taillon, a priest in Rhode Island, said:

This ad is an outrageous affront to Catholics and a mockery of our most sacred beliefs and practices.

Hyundai has stopped running the ad.

The unexpected response created by the ad… prompted us to take a more critical and informed look at the spot. “Though unintentional, we now see it was insensitive.

Sadly, MWW has been unable to find a copy of the ad.

It’s not like me, but I didn’t like this one, they did kinda trample over stuff Christians have close to their hearts. I’m not arguing in favour of censorship, as you’d already know, but perhaps it was shrewd of them to pull the advert, but let’s face it, Christians have actually managed to up the adverts profile anyway….

  2. […] the recent controversy surrounding the Hyundai World Cup advert, this one from Kia entitled; Soul Hamster Commercial, is how to really do […]

I’d argue the better way to fight this twaddle is to argue that Christians don’t ‘own’ religious myths and imagery, so have no right to dictate how it is interpreted/ reinvented/retold.
For example, communion, by it’s very nature, is a communal feast – based on the idea of the Last Supper, which, if contemporary, would have probably been a bunch of guys sharing a take-out pizza anyway, no?
Honestly, I don’t see how a reasonable Christian can take offence at that, and even the crown of thorns stuff – take a good look and try and argue that football games aren’t played out like modern religious dramas – the rituals, the roles we give players, the style of reporting….
Seriously folks, time to get annoyed back.
What next? the C of E telling us we can’t use common phrases which originally appeared in the King James Bible?

I didn’t realise the “UK” had a football team.
