And this little piggy went “wee wee wee” all the way home

We hate picking up stories from The Sun, so we’ll let the GALHA blog do the talking on this one.

The worst part of it is – as far as we can determine, the Muslim Council of Britain weren’t even consulted. Again.

Isn’t it 6 months too early for this?

It comes as no surprise that the muslim world, with it’s, oh so delicate sense of what is ‘offensive’ to their beliefs will then happily plagiarise a registered trade name at the chance of making a fast buck, or should that be beuck…. hmmm, I wonder if they sell allah shaped ice creams here:

    Talk about crass hypocrisy!

This is the Sun – how accurate is this story?

    Why the obsession with and
why the objection to pig imagery,
and not to other animals equally
    considered to be haraam?

Because in the Middle East, pigs COMPETE for food with humans.
In Northern Europe, they eat things we cannot (like beech-mast) and are then turned into food.
That’s why pigs are “unclean” – and of course, they’r jealous.
Nothing like a bit of crackling …..

  6. Roger Hart says:

It is now thought that humans evolved from a pig-like animal. Isn’t it obvious why some religions are desperate to stop humans eating pigs. It’s not because pigs are dirty – it’s because eating pigs is a form of cannibalism!

Mike – I hardly feel that all muslims can be tarred with the brush of crass hypocrisy because some are obsessive whingers who need a good slap for complaining about porcine representations, whereas others like burgers and are happy to open a restaurant with a jokey name based on a racist insult (the blog was part right, Beur (Butter in English) does mean of north african origin, but only from the mouths of racists, or from 2nd/3rd gen kids who have reclaimed it, much like american blacks have with nigger).

There’s stacks of examples of small restaurants using a comedy name referencing a chain of restaurants or of small shops in general semi-humorously taking the name of a larger chain in vain.

  8. Joe says:

That blog Mike’s linked to seems to just be a general dumping ground for gun-nuts and racist twats, fwiw – “why we need armed rednecks patrolling the Texas-Mexico border” and suchlike.

Joe, I’m afraid that it’s just everyday “Biblical” Americans plus a healthy dose of that muddled dogmatic thinking that commonly goes under the umbrella of “libertarianism” over there. (My wife’s American [but by no means a right-wing dogmahead], and my m-i-l works for the world’s largest creationist organisation, so I’m speaking from direct experience here 🙂 ) Simply another case of people who can’t face the concept of an uncertain & economically/politically/morally complex world, so invent ideologies that require no active thought by the individual… Try pointing out to a libertarian who also claims deeply-held religious beliefs that Ayn Rand (and her acolytes) actually put atheism at the core of her system (alongside pathetically simplistic economic dogma, etc, etc). Sometimes you can even see their brains melting while they try to justify themselves… 🙂

    Porcine preoccupations

Very well then, I’ll try to put it another way:
Ali, you don’t make a fuss about Mickey Mouse,
Basil Brush, Muffin the Mule and depictions of
kittens & puppies, so why get your dhoti in a
twist about Pinky & Perky? – nobody’s asking
    you to eat them.
