I Wanna Be Like Osama, in Edinburgh

Possibly-concocted controversy at the Edinburgh Festival this year comes in the form of Jihad The Musical, an “all-singing, all-dancing madcap gallop” through “the whacky world of international terrorism”.

It has become the subject of one of those Downing Street e-petitions calling for the Prime Minister to “condemn the tasteless portrayal of terrorism and its victims,” without which it would never have got a mention in The Observer or BBC.

Anyway from the YouTube clip above, it looks like it might be quite a laugh.

I particularly like the camp of it, with the flowing burqas on the dancers who come floating about the singer. Not quite 72 of them, and one can only speculate as to their virginity – or even their gender – but a hoot. I don’t know whom it’ll offend the more: the Muslims or those who think jihad is a Serious Subject and should not have the piss taken out of it. Is there, I wonder, a serious objection to be made about treating terrorism as a joke? Or does this sort of satire allow the collective consciousness to work things through, see things in perspective? Interesting point – but one that should be settled by reasoned argument, as I’m sure the MediaWatchWatch commentariat would agree, and not by banning.

Looks to be a considerable improvement on JS:TO which was just plain crap, frankly.

  3. G. Tingey says:

The more piss is taken out of the religious fuckwits (of any religion) the better.

More power to their (flour) bombs, I say!

Right on Mr (?) Tingey. This e-petition is pretty silly and sounds like the sort of shit Beyer and his merry men/women spout. From the clip, this is sending up terrorists, not terrorism. While we can’t separate the two in the real world, we sure as hell can on stage. By making fun of these assholes, their message is weakened to the point of irrelavence and that can only be a good thing.

One thing we can be reasonably sure of, the government will just ignore the petition anyway such is their track record on them.

  5. Colin says:

10 signatories on the petition so far.

“How do you solve a problem like Sharia?”

  7. Martin says:

Glad to see Rage Boy has signed, along with Osama and triplets called Karen, Karen and Lynn Staples.
I hope you mediawatchwatch people aren’t taking the piss.

Can’t imagine Mediawatchwatch folk would take the piss. I mean, Usaqa Madiq and Bin Fartyn (among other of the usual suspects) have yet to appear?
