Magazinet withdraws Mohammed cartoons
According to the Brussels Journal, the Norwegian newspaper which published the Mohammed cartoons in support of Jylands-Posten has withdrawn them from its website in the face of death threats.
Vebjørn Selbekk, the editor of Magazinet, received threatening anonymous emails, including one containing a picture of a burnt body.
The e-mail with the pictures of the burnt body is the most frightening. But I am not afraid. This is of course unpleasant, especially for a family man. But I cannot go around being afraid
said Selbekk.
Another Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet, has also published the cartoons as a gesture of support.
Meanwhile, Danish Muslim leaders who have been touring the world explaining how offensive the cartoons are have actually added three cartoons to the original twelve: one depicting Mohammed as a paedophile demon, one of him with the snout of a pig, and another of a praying Muslim being sodomised by a dog.
The origin of the extra three cartoons is unknown, but they are sure to stir up a bit of hatred. Which, of course, is the whole point.

You hit the nail on the head here. If no one had complained about the cartoons, they would probably not got any publicity, and we wouldn’t be talking about them.

To my Islamic friends who feel compelled to boycott the Danish product: do so if you must. But I would suggest to you that the more appropriate action is to picket the newspaper premises. The later is more effective and in so picketing, you are exercising the appropriate remedy for the appropriate grievance against the appropriate party.
To my Western friends who are bashing Islam: you are only hurting yourselves and giving our Islamic friends reasons to hate us.
We are presently in very trying times. It is wrong to blame the whole of Islam upon the acts of a few. It is wrong to blame the whole of Denmark upon the acts of a few. All of the above should be clear to more than a few as it is only just.
It is not easy to be just. Justice requires measured responses. Justice requires that we hold responsible only those who commit the offense and no one else. In putting such restraints upon ourselves to act just, we sometimes find that we are unable to respond in the manner that our passions demand. But in following justice and resisting our baser urges, we usually find that such restraint was the best action.
Justice demands that the punishment fit the crime, and that only the criminal be punished.
And that is why the West will continue to hunt the criminal Bin Laden and his accomplices until they can be brought to justice for the cold blooded killing of innocent people who were of all races and of all creeds.
And unfortunately, that is why Iraq will probably turn out poorly. Where was our restraint in exercising justice? The Iraqis did not fly the planes into the Trade Towers, yet the energy of the outrage from 9/11 was the fuel for America’s initial support of the war.
Nobody, East or West, Islam or Christian, is immune from acting unjustly and using a broad brush to wrongfully blame innocents. Unfortunately, all people basically have the same DNA which result in universal weaknesses and blindspots.
This is a Texan’s promise to the world: in our next election, we will elect someone who knows how to hold the appropriate party responsible and doesn’t lose his head and attack “someone who lives in the same neighborhood.”

I have now read a lot of comments that didn’t understand why the newspaper brough the pictures.
Here’s the whole story:
In Denmark last year a book explaining the Koran in danish(and not disrespecting it in any way was going to get published.
Some caricaturists who were supposed to make non-disrespectful drawings in the book where threatened on their lifes and their families lifes by extremist muslems. Therefore nobody, in a democratic country with free speech I have to add, dared to draw any pictures for the book.
After a long discussion in the danish society about the problem the paper decided to bring those pictures, to show muslems in Denmark, that when they have chosen to live in a country like Denmark, they should understand that freedom of speech, satire sarcasm etc is a way of life here.
That’s why the pictures where published: The muslem community in Denmark threatened danish lifes and way of living.

Aside from the hotheads, what we have here is an impasse.
Some Muslims believe any jokes or implicit criticism of their religion is so deeply defamatory that it should be punished by death.
Westerners hold freedom of the press and freedom of expression as the fundamental rights of their political systems. The bedrock upon which their country’s stand.
To the westerners I would say, argue above. Don’t get upset and threaten or insult, as that accomplishes nothing. Explain. Educate. Enlighten.
To the rather hotheaded Muslims who have been threatening every Tom, Dick and Harry on here with death I would say, gently, you’re not doing your cause a great deal of good.
Have confidence in your beliefs. Don’t buy the paper. Pray to your god to send you the wisdom to accept criticism. Believe that yours is the one true faith but have respect for those of other faiths.
Because these troubled times we are all in? They could get much worse. And I fear it is the Muslims who will, in the end, suffer the most if it does.
When is someone going to setup a website asking people from across the world to submit their own depictions of religious figures? Another blow to the thought police.
It will happen, and the Muslims are going to wish they had never started all this. The original cartoons were not particularly clever or funny but people with more time on their hands (IT professionals and bored media hacks) will produce more offensive, funnier and hopefully more numerous drawings.

What is curious to me about the comments from espoused believers in MUHAMMED is their belief that anyone, other than the artist of the cartoons, were slighting them. I can understand their claim that the publisher exhibited bad judgement and poor taste when it published these cartoons. I can understand that these cartoons would be a source of insult. But to extrapolate the intentions of the artist and cartoonist on the rest of the non-muslim world is frankly childish, absurd, and sad. It denigrates them in the eyes of GOD.
We are all GOD’s children. We deserve and should treat everyone with kindness, compassion, and caring. GOD wishes his children to be treated in this way. May GOD bless your souls and bring clarity to your thinking.

Any religion, creed, belief, political party, country or any other institution, which persecutes critique or even ridicule of its leading figures, is TOTALITARIAN or fascist.
The inability to make fun of “THE ONE” is symptomatic for the humourless insanity of islam as it appears today. Islam is in the same situation as christianity in the time of the crusades: intolerant, fanatic, bigoted. Muslims talk about “the crusaders” – and behave like them. “Kill the unbelievers!” they cry. What is tolerant about that? We, the people who cherish freedom and it’s expression will not let those, blinded by their religious blinkers, govern the rules of our freedom of expression.
The cartoons? How true they are! Is it not true that young people in the islamic world are enticed to blow themselves and others up for the promise of dozens of virgins in heaven? What an exploitation of naive and stupid bigotry!
And why, if Islam is so truthful and peaceful, do 1.3 billion muslims have virtually no democracies worth mentioning?
And another question? Does the prophet Mohammad need protection? I think it is the muslims that need protection from themselves and their leaders. Ever since Islam has lost it’s tolerance and became more and more fanatic and under the influence of the Wahabis its capability for innovation disappeared. The islamic world is an intellectual desert where the only book in good supply is the Koran.

We are all children of Abraham, we should not fight. I am a Christian and it would upset me greatly if anyone drew sacrilegious pictures of Christ. The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH)is the icon of Islam, why disrespect a brother? I believe this issue has been blown out of proportion. However, it is also mainly the fault of the Danish gvernment, and the west in general to have it reached so far. If the Danish prime minister has received the Muslem deligates from the begning rather than acting as a smart ass…things would not have gone that far.
If many of those westeners have been trying to understand all the reasons behind our anger in the middle east, much of which is fully justified in light of the hypocracy and double standards they reflect, this outrage would not have happened.

I live amongst muslims and I can honestly say I do not think I have ever seen a bigger bunch of ill informed war mongering hypocrites. They are all spouting ‘peace be upon you my brother’ at every greeting but there does not seem to be any rational coolness or tolerance of any other religion, oppinion, race, or people. The young men all get to grow a beard and play at being Imam until it no longer suits them. I have seen personalities change over night as un-educated imams with no more qualifications than a few lessons from the Quran, bathe in the adulation of worshippers as they listen to sermons and hate spat from the friday prayer meetings by little men who have now found an audience for their words.

I am also an muslim girl and I want to say that not all muslim people are like that. Of course we believe Mohammed and we respect him but personally I have no problem with the cartoons. What those cartoons make a difference about our belives but I just want to ask this people what happened after you published those cartoons. Did your life become better. Did they make you happy. What was the reason to do this even you knew that all fanatic islams become angry. Why it happened and was

No one should take lightly the hard held beliefs of another Humans religion. It is too deep a thing to be laughed at or made cheap by silly drawings.
